Fan Hanging Hardware Underwriters Laboratories requires the use of an approved junction box (j-box) or suspension method to support ceiling fans. These braces and metal j-boxes are the best available. The j-boxes may be mounted directly to a ceiling joist. The combination of a j-box and brace can be used to mount the fan between two ceiling joists.
