The Arts & Crafts movement was highly influential in the second half of the nineteenth century. Its bold, angular, style was a radical departure from Victorian themes of the time. Seeking a native American style, influencial designer Gustav Stickley incorporated designs reminiscent of the rustic furniture of the (Spanish) American South West with its exposed joinery and rectilinear lines, and the term "Mission Style" was thus born.
